American Heart/American Stroke association came up with guidelines for the endovascular treatment (putting a device into the brain vessel to remove/dissolve the blockage). These are guidelines, and there are various exceptions that may develop in why endovascular treatment may not be attempted in a certain patient.

Intra-arterial means that a doctor will place a small tube (aka catheter) into an artery in the groin. The doctor will thread the catheter into the blocked vessel in the brain and attempt to remove the blockage with a medical device or dissolve the blockage with a drug. This procedure requires the use of x-rays and x-ray dye.
